If you have ever heard a pro poker player talk about what is most important when you are on the tables you have heard about position being important and being aggressive being important. These two both go hand in hand. When you are in late position you can be more aggressive which means that you can steal more liberally from your opponents. This increases your win rate and makes it easier to achieve your goal of 5 big bets per 100 hands.
When you are aggressive in poker it is much easier for you to make situations in the hand go your way. When you are the aggressor you also have the ability to make your opponent fold to win the pot.
Stealing the Pot
Stealing the pot is easy in poker when you are the aggressor. It is done easily by playing aggressive and making your opponent fold. When your opponent folds you win the hand right then and there. You don’t have to have the best hand or even go to showdown to win because you were the aggressor betting and they folded.
When you steal the pot you increase your win rate significantly. If you aim for 5BB/100 hands you can get there by stealing the pot a few times no problem. When you raise to isolate a limper and get to take the pot down with an aggressive continuation bet you earn even more big bucks. This is a great way to get value out of hands like suited connectors that have value to make very strong hands when the bluff doesn’t succeed.
Table Image
When you are aggressive you can also set a good table image of being loose. When you raise in late position you are trying to steal the blinds because there aren’t that many players left to compete with you for the pot. When you raise in early position you are raising with a strong hand. A lot of players simply look at the fact that you are raising a lot and don’t take your position into their consideration and think that you are a bully. These players will often try to compete against your early position bets because to them you have a loose table image. This is a great way to get fish to stake off to you when you bully them by stealing a few times.
Value Bets
There are too many poker players who think that you are supposed to check when you make a monster hand. This is completely wrong. When you have a great hand you want to play a big pot with it. This means that you should be making value bets with this hand in hopes of getting it all in. When you slow play your strong hands you have to hope that your opponent bets because if not then you missed a whole street of value.
When you value bet against your opponent how much you bet should change from player to player. You need to test the waters against opponents to see how much they are willing to pay you when you value bet because you want to bet the maximum that they will call. Every penny that you can get from your opponent should be squeezed out. If you make a value bet and it doesn’t get called next time try value betting a little bit less. Continue this process until you find a good amount to value bet against your weak opponent.
