To be able to become an established player at the low stakes Omaha level and start moving up to higher limits you need to have a very sufficient bankroll. To have a normal bankroll of 20-25 buyins for games like holdem are sufficient, but when playing a couple tables of Omaha your luck could run out in a matter of minutes. You will want to have about 40 buyins for your limit to not feel too much of a pounding if you run bad one day.
One key to find success at any level of Omaha but especially at the lower stakes is your selection of hands before the flop. Many players will overplay hands like AAxx and get themselves in trouble stacking off versus a big draw with only one pair and no possible redraw to have a made hand. Making hands is what you should be looking to do rather than playing your big pairs like you would in holdem. Playing connecting hands that can make straights or get to the nut flush are the most profitable way to play at low stakes Omaha.
Playing position in Omaha along with playing connecting hands will make you money in the long run and prevent you from being stuck in pots with weak hands. To be able to take pots away from players who are check calling is a way to increase how much money you will get back at the end of sessions, and also if you are playing aggressively and constantly taking down pots when you actually have the made hand like a nut flush someone might pay you off for it with a weaker flush. Whereas, if you are sitting back and playing no hands players even at the low limits will recognize this and not play pots against you when you are shoving away at pots to take them down.
Playing hands out of position in Omaha will not work too well for you unless you start smacking flops and catching a lot of cards. If the player from the button raised pre-flop and you hit a set on the flop or flop the nut straight it is almost ideal to check then raise them but leading out into a pot where you flop top set could also get your hand value if the player has KK or AA in the pocket because most likely they will pot shove your flop bet and you can complete the all-in move and stack through them. Very few players at low limits understand that AA and KK with rag cards really won’t make you the most money unless you hit a set with them, and even then it may be obvious. So, what to take from low limit cash games is to be able to stay aggressive in position and be able to figure out where you are in the hand to make optimal decisions returning the most for what you put in.
