Rakeback Strategy Tips: NL Rebuy Strategy

Any poker player will tell you that playing re-buy tournaments is one of the easiest things to play. For the first hour or until the re-buy period ends the main concept to grasp is that you want to stack your table up with the most chips possible. A player re-buying 10 times or so is very common in this style of a tournament. The all-in play pre-flop is the best play to make within the first hour and will warrant the best results in the long run. Many players choose to sit back and wait for hands in re-buy tournaments and let the guys who are stacking off every hand just keep pushing. A problem with that strategy is that even picking up a hand like Aces; if you are playing it from early position you may not get action if you just put a raise in before the flop because your table image is that you are incredibly tight. Sitting back and waiting is only a good strategy if you run incredibly well, and pick good spots to get your money in.

After the first hour and the re-buy period ends now comes the actual play of the tournament when players stop having fun with going all-in and finally get down to business. I still feel that players are coming off of their high from going all-in so much that they may play a lot more hands then they normally would if it was just a regular tournament with no re-buys or add-ons. Many players especially online will still be stacking off with hands like AJ or AQ pre-flop instead of slowing their game down and collecting their thoughts to progress through the tournament. These are the players you want to feed off of and really start increasing your stack through as the tournament progresses. A lot of players don’t see a simple fact that most players after the first hour have a lot of steam from playing hands previously and may bust right there as soon as the second hour starts. It is a big advantage to your play if you can sit there and maintain your mind for the second hour of the re-buy because you could increase your stack a great deal just by being patient and trapping your opponents for big pots.

After the second hour it comes down to how bad you want it. You have played with virtually the same players the whole tournament and now will start to be getting switched around from table to table as the money approaches. To keep your head when seeing new faces at the table to your left and right will allow you to progress through the tournament. At full ring tournament tables switching to a new table you may want to sit and observe the players before you start moving a lot of chips in to the pot. One reason being that you may choose to play an AJ for a raise against a player who hasn’t played a hand in the past hour. You not knowing this are at a disadvantage if a jack hits the flop on a dry board and the player wakes up with Queens or Kings. You could lose a lot of your stack in a pot that if you knew better you would not have played. The main thing to play re-buy tournaments and to be successful in them is to always be in your comfort zone so you can constantly build your stack and make your way to the final table.
