Rakeback Strategy Tips: Slow Playing Versus Fast Playing Hands

When to slow play hands only really will work for you when you have a made hand and your other opponent can’t catch up to your hand on the next street. Hands such as quads or even top set on a very dry looking board should almost be checked against tighter players because they most likely will not try to take a stab at the pot to take it down. Checking the flop will help you return more on your money if your opponent picks up a draw on the turn and can call a bet. If they then make their flush or straight on the river you will pick up their whole stack or a big portion of it and get rewarded for flopping an unbeatable hand. Many opponents who are recognized as calling stations but don’t like to bet at the pot themselves to win it are ideal for this play. Meaning most of these people will call off money on draws without realizing the board. The only thing that these people see is that they could make their hand, and when they do on the river the trap is sprung and they will most likely call any bet you make even if it is an over shove like an all-in. Players have trouble laying down hands with money invested in pots at any level and especially when they make their hand on the river; regardless of how the board looks, or way the hand was played.

When to fast play hands is when facing opponents who will try and steal the pot away from you on the flop or before the flop is dealt out. Ideally flopping a set against an aggressive player you could get them to commit a good portion of their stack with just middle pair, straight or flush draws. Leading with sets has been recently known to be a standard play in cash games or tournaments. The reason being that it builds up a bigger pot and a lot of opponents you will play will float the flop. If a player you are up against floats the flop and a blank card hits the turn, against an aggressive player, they will most likely try to fire at the pot. When they do fire at it which almost every player will do if they were just floating the flop with nothing; the check raise is the perfect play for the situation allowing you to let your opponent fire away at the pot and allow you to wreak the benefits of his aggression with them having little to no hope of winning the hand. If a card comes out on the turn that gives your opponent a better chance of winning the hand such as a straightening card or possible top pair for them then leading the turn may be the best play to make. The key to playing No limit holdem is to be able to pick up two streets of equity in every pot where you feel you have the best hand. Both of these plays will get you the essential equity and allow you to become a winning player.
