Any real poker player knows the enemy that lurks behind every bad emotion in your body. There is no one that can say that they have never played poker on tilt, not even the top famous poker pros. Recognizing tilt is very important because when you play on tilt you run the risk of making plays that aren’t based on logic and odds that are instead based on raw emotion, which is the incorrect way to play poker. You should always have a completely clear head to play poker. If there is something in your life that is bothering you that you cannot stop thinking about then I suggest you find something to clear your mind or simply avoid the tables because you will probably run victim of tilt.
Tilting
Everyone has tilted, so there is no need to be ashamed. You will tilt 100 more times at the tables minimum in the rest of your poker career. You just cannot help to get steamed when you get it all in preflop with pocket AA against your opponent’s 72 off suit and lose. Variance is a big cause of tilt. Some players take it to heart when their good hands lose and begin to not only tilt when they take bad beats, but oddly enough begin to tilt when they get it all in with a great hand like pocket AA.
Variance is very disheartening for any poker player and can very well lead to tilt. You have to think about bad beats like this: If the player’s bad hand didn’t win every now and then they would not continue to play the bad hand for you to capitalize on and win against for the most part. So in a nutshell, variance is your best friend because it keeps bad players playing bad hands.
Dealing With Tilt
After you realize that you are tilting you need to get off of the tables. This is so important to any player because you run the risk of losing more of your bankroll due to playing emotionally. You can see that it is a job to grind your bankroll up. Do not donate any of it back by playing on tilt and get off of the tables.
Sometimes you will tilt regularly during a down swing and getting off of the tables can seem like you are never playing. Before it gets to this point you need to do something to ensure that you are never playing on tilt. A great way to do this is post-it notes. You can write messages to yourself on post-it notes and stick them all over the edge of your computer screen. This way you cannot miss them. You should write things that will have you focusing on analyzing your game and mental state while you play. One of the most popular post-it note messages for online poker players is “Am I playing my ‘A’ game?” If you are not playing grade A to B+ poker (good logical poker) then you should simply get off the tables.
Another great means of dealing with tilt is finding something that quickly takes your mind away from whatever happened to make you tilt. Some players get shooter video games and go shoot stuff to take their mind off of the situation. Others will take a pet for a walk. Whatever you choose to do to help deal with tilt needs to be something that takes your mind out of the game. You want to come back to your computer fresh and ready to win.
